Though I've been extremely comfortable with words my entire life, I'm terrible at numbers. I can't do figures in my head. Fractions make me panic, and I will stare glassy-eyed when people try to give me numbers to memorize. It's a mental block kind of thing at this point - an absolute aversion to conversion. On the other hand, I'm the go-to person for definitions and spelling. I can live with that.
Writers are, first and foremost, avid readers. That's how it begins. We need to read and eventually we need to write. Our minds are never idle. We hear our characters speak. We see a scene in startling detail and we're moved to share what we can't mute. It isn't just a calling - it's a command.
In the real world, I'm happily married to a man who sets the bar quite high for my romantic heroes. He's the smartest person I know, my best friend, and incredibly good for my ego. I couldn't do this without his support. Together, we raised three sons and are now enjoying our empty nest and the newly discovered pleasures of being grandparents.
